Jan. 8 Kirtan—Dennis Hawk

Kirtan is of the oldest sacred sound traditions of the world. Consisting of call-and-response chanting, Kirtan involves Satsang, a Sanskrit term meaning where people gather together as a community to remember to turn inward and to help each other find our own inner path. Using a combination of sound, vibration, melody, harmony, and Sanskrit mantras- Kirtan is moving and exhilarating as well as quieting and meditative. A student of David Newman (Durga Das) Dennis Hawk will lead attendees in Kirtan that will calm the mind and open the heart.

Conflict can be productive. Conflict can produce ideas and shared understandings. Managing conflict means using a process to share differences and find common ground. Identifying and respecting ground rules as well as following a resolution process leads to strong relationships. This is a presentation we can use in many places!

Arthur has been a regular speaker here for several years. He graduated from Beloit College in 1972 cum laude, and received his MA in Religious Studies from the University of Chicago Divinity School in 1974, and his JD from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1977. This is the last in his series of three sermons, but if you missed the first two, you will still find this one provocative.

Our offering this week will go to TREP. Keep in mind that $20 feeds a family of 4, $40 feeds 2 families of 4, etc.! How many families do you think we could feed?

Dr. Kasper grew up in Milwaukee and received her B.S. from UW-Milwaukee and her Ph. D. from McGill University in Montreal in 1965. She pursued a 10-year career in research in psychoneuroendocrinology and psychoneuroimmunology. She has long been interested in the traditional healing approaches of “pre-scientific” cultures. Meeting Blackwolf working at Lutheran Social Services in Oshkosh in 1990 began her journey into Ojibwe traditions, from the dramatic and powerful sweat lodge to simple meditative approaches that can be practiced daily.These worlds of research and tradition connect through evidence that gratitude strengthens health.

November 13 “Things I Thought I Knew” --Ellen Puerling

Ellen taught for many years in Mequon, then when she retired, she went to teach in inner city Milwaukee. She says she will “center on the chapter of my big change in education when I went from teaching in a comfortable, wealthy suburb of Mequon to an inner city school. As you know this was a time of a steep learning curve for me.”

Her other claim to fame is that she’s Mary Jo Urban’s sister!

“Belief in a deity, you know, the one that starts with a big G, seems to be the norm in our country. Because we live here, we have to be in conversation with our neighbors. Who is their god (or, maybe, who are their gods), and how can we get one that we can live with?”

Arthur began this three-part series last month with “How to be an Atheist.” Next month it will be “How to Be a (UU) Christian.”

We will be taking an offering this week for Hope House. Soup Sunday/Potluck will follow the service.

October 9 “Love: the Power and the Pain”—Judy Goldsmith

Judy Goldsmith was an educator, and most recently the provost for the University of Wisconsin Fond du Lac. Currently she is on the county board.

She will explore love as both a rich human emotion and a powerful motivator for action. Think of a recent incident involving 6-8 people, none of whom knew each other, physically lifting a burning car off a motorcyclist who was caught underneath the car.

Guest speaker and Wisconsin historian, Kerry Trask, had gall bladder on Thursday, so he cannot be with us this Sunday, but he will speak later this year. In his place, local LUUF member, Ginny Finnel, has offered to move up her service, “Remembering the Saints.” It is one of my favorite regular services that we have, so I hope you will feel the same way!

You probably remember that we light candles for those we have lost during the year and say a few words about them. We hope you will take part.

Our speaker, Joe Metzen, is the president of the board that is steering this project to fruition. It is a monument to our Native American past--three Indian figures, one carrying a canoe--that will be on the Lake Michigan Shore between Two Rivers and Manitowoc. He will explore the spiritual and environmental aspects of this monument, created by R.T. "Skip" Wallen who is a Manitowoc native and graduated as part of the LHS class of 1960.

Our yearlong series “Just What Is This Unitarian Universalism and the Seven Principles?” continues on Tuesday, January 18thth at 7:00 pm at the Fellowship. Dick and Mary Jo Urban will guide discussion of the third principle that we agree to affirm and promote: Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations. Everyone is welcome. Bring your thoughts and questions. Learn from others and investigate your own spiritual and religious lives.

Our “Common Read” group (UU’s throughout the country read and discuss “The Death of Josseline- Immigration Stories from the Arizona Borderlands”) will meet for the second session Wednesday, January 26th at 3:00 pm at the Fellowship. *NOTE TIME CHANGE. We’ll cover up to Chapter 6 at that time using the UUA discussion guide for Session 2. If one or two more people wish to join, there’s room- and time to catch up. Other recommended books covering the topic are “Enrique’s Journey” and “Tortilla Curtain.”

Meditation continues every Sunday evening at 6:30 at the Fellowship. If it is canceled for some reason a note will go out Sunday afternoon via uushare. All are welcome.

Recovery from mental illness would allow individuals to strive to achieve fuller and more meaningful lives. Soup Sunday Potluck—a trial Thanksgiving dish? One from your immigrant background?

Many Americans are the descendents of immigrants who came to this country seeking a better life. Today the faces of immigration have changed but not the reasons for coming. The trouble, of course, is illegal immigration. Debate over this issue has sharply divided our country and the federal government has not taken any action to reform the broken system. However, there is action we as citizens of Wisconsin can take in the next year. Under the federal REAL ID Act of 2007, states are allowed to issue limited purpose drivers licenses to people who are not able to provide proof of their legal status and who are not eligible to receive a social security number. What can we do to support our neighbors and friends who need our help to continue to be contributing members of our communities? Let's start that conversation.

Arthur Thexton will be back for his first Sunday of the year. He’ll be speaking every other month this year. His topic this week: “Atonement: Religious and Political.”

We will be taking an offering for the flood victims in Pakistan. Here is an explanation from the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee on the need:

Imagine you're a woman who's been raised to depend on your male relatives. You've been forced from your home by dangerous floodwaters that have destroyed your home, your crops, your livelihood. You don't know how to swim. You've been separated from your husband, and you have children to take care of. All the relief workers you've seen are men, who tradition says you're not to talk to. Now, imagine you meet someone who recognizes your strength and abilities, who listens to your story, who asks what you need and knows how to help.

In the midst of the devastating floods in Pakistan, this is the situation that many women find themselves in when they meet UUSC partner Bedari. Empowering women with an innovative approach to relief work, Bedari is working to ensure that women and children, among the most at-risk people in the disaster, are not overlooked in relief efforts.

Currently, more than 17.2 million people have been affected by the flooding, 1,600 people have died, over 1.2 million houses have been damaged or destroyed, and nearly 14,000 square miles — almost one and a half times the size of Massachusetts — of crops have been lost. While the floodwaters in the northern districts are reported to be receding, in southern Punjab and Sindh provinces extensive damage continues, and Anbreen Ajaib of Bedari tells UUSC that it is not over yet. "The situation is not yet under control," Ajaib says. "People still need rescue, food, and medicine. There are huge health issues — diarrhea, malaria, respiratory diseases, and other flood-related diseases."

Bedari started their relief work on August 20, establishing two support centers for women and children in Nowshera and Charsaddah. These are both in the northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a more traditional area of Pakistan where society observes purdah, the strict segregation of women from men and the world outside their homes.

Sister Judy Miller - A member of St. Joseph of Carondelet, of St. Louis, MO, Judy ran a small rural parish in Navarino for 10 years. and because she had the distinction of being a woman running a Catholic parish, was featured on "48 Minutes". She than ran an 800 member parish, St. Mary's in Oshkosh, WI, for 12 years, after which she studied spirituality in Chicago for one year. Since last fall she has been spiritual director at the Norbertine Center for Spirituality at St Norbert Abbey in DePere.

April 18 "Yom Hashoah and Healing Israel-Palestine." Arthur Thexton, our “monthly minister” from Madison

Yom Hashoah is the observance of the Holocaust, the Shoah. This shattering event led to the founding of the modern state of Israel, a political event which has resulted in continual war and near-war, the emergence of a serious Palestinian resistance, Israeli oppression of Palestinians, and an apparently intractable conflict throughout the middle east, which the US is expected to lead in solving. Clearly, no one is living up to the religious values shared by all! In this season of rebirth and renewal, what spiritual perspective can we bring to this difficult situation?

In addition, this is our monthly offering Sunday, this week going to Two Rivers Ecumenical Pantry. We also have a basket in the front hall for canned or boxed food. Thanks!

He just sent most recent book, The Riot at the Poet’s Café, to his publisher. He is also a boat builder, metal smith, and cabinetmaker in Door County.

He says, “Poetry helps us order the disorder of our lives, whether it’s the rush of external sensations or the internal chatter of our minds. Poetry lets us touch the roots of our shared existence.”

Arthur Thexton will lead the fellowship in a Passover Seder, a Jewish ritual feast that marks the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Passover. We are asking members and visitors to join in the preparation of the feast.

Some tips from Arthur..."

"This is a potluck meal, and your only responsibility is to bring a dish which is "kosher for Passover" according to the Sephardic rules, which means that you may use rice and legumes. The forbidden foods are: pork products, any water animal that does not have scales, any kind of dairy product including butter, sour cream, yogurt, milk, etc. (because this is a meat meal), and any grain which could rise (wheat except for matzo meal, corn including corn starch and high fructose corn syrup, rye, spelt, and oats). The absence of flour is an excuse for creativity, and many use matzo meal as a substitute, although it doesn't work very well and you still can't add yeast. There are a zillion recipes, which you can find through Googling "kosher passover recipe", or start at:

Feb. 21 "A Quaker Style Service" by Arthur Thexton, who returns to the Lakeshore for his monthly sermon. This month, Arthur will focus on the Quaker's "Inner Light" principle, the point of which is that we all have an Inner Light, a voice of conscience or God, within us. Our task is to listen closely for this, and to follow it. This is not an easy or simple task, as we are full of competing voices, emotions, temptations, and urges. It takes time to think and feel our way through the cacophony in our brains. So we take time, once or twice a week, to put aside the daily routine paying attention to our Inner Light in silence and reverence. The service will begin, next week, with our entry into the building. Please plan to be silent as you sit down. In addition, we’ll take a collection for Lakeshore Interfaith Hospitality network during the service.

However, afterward we will have a Soup Sunday potluck where we can talk as much as we’d like! Please bring a dish to pass.

Judy Rollin is a weaver and will share her thoughts on the process of weaving, the process of Spring, and the process of her own spirituality. Her presentation will be colorful (in a good way,) tactile, and hopefully- hopeful.

We had our first Seder Service last year with Arthur. This Jewish ceremony commemorates the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. It’s a meaningful all-family service.

Marilyn Sontag from the League of Women Voters will talk about the issue of a Drug Court for Manitowoc County.

Our meditation sessions have now been switched to Sunday evenings at 6:30 PM at our Fellowship. Tara and Greg, who have done such a wonderful job in leading our sessions, are getting out of the Wisconsin winter and heading South for about a month. Jan. 31 "The Heart of a Buffalo" is a one hour musical drama in which Dennis Hawk plays the part of Black Elk (a Lakota Medicine Man) who lived through the death of his chief and 2nd cousin Crazy Horse. Interwoven in the drama are original songs that fit the performance. Dennis is a yoga workshop leader, combining his music and his Native American heritage in his practice and instruction of yoga. He is a Cherokee / Mesquaki descendent, a pipe carrier, sweat lodge leader and teacher of Native American spirituality. Dennis is a singer / songwriter / story-teller who plays guitar and Native American flute.

A look at what is critical, and what is merely important, in the current debate about reforming the health care finance system in our country. Arthur Thexton will bring his UU upbringing, his 19 years as a health lawyer, his hospital chaplain experience, his father's career as a group health insurance actuary, and his college major in economics, to bear upon this topic. How can we respond, spiritually, to the debate?"

January 3—“How LIHN Serves the Homeless”—Julie Hed

Julie Hed is the Director of the Lakeshore Interfaith Hospitality Network.

LIHN enables congregations to meet the most important basic needs of homeless families, who represent the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. LIHN is affiliated with and modeled after a highly successful program that started 18 years ago in New Jersey, and now serves the homeless in over 100 cities in the U.S. In most networks, more than half the guests in the program are children, and most children are less than five years old.

January 10—“Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone” Juliet Kosarzycki

Juliet’s purpose is to inspire others to step out of their comfort zone. Her talk will focus on how she came to adopt that as a mission and how it has affected her, her outlook, her actions and her results. She’s also been involved in the Babbling Bubbler Theater group (now housed in our old rented building). She spent two years in Albania in the Peace Corps as well.

The LUUF welcomes John Morris and Paisley Harris to this Sunday's service.

John Morris and his wife Paisley Harris are founding members of the Open Circle UU Fellowship in Fond du Lac, where Paisley is currently serving as vice-president. They became UU's shortly after moving from Minneapolis to Fond du Lac in 2002, where they began working with the group forming the Open Circle Fellowship. They are both professors, John in Math and Natural Sciences at Marian University, and Paisley in History at UW-Fond du Lac.

This service will reflect on the role of science and its limits in developing our personal spirituality. The service will include readings from Pope John Paul II and Kurt Vonnegut, and songs by Peter Mayer and the Grateful Dead.

The service begins at 10:00 a.m.

Choir practice: There will be a brief choir practice beginning at 9:15 a.m. Please congregate near the piano on the first floor.

The 15^th of November is a big day at LUUF! It’s Bring-a-Friend Sunday and Arthur Thexton is speaking on “Can I be a humanist Jewish Buddhist Christian Pagan Unitarian Universalist? OR What do UU's believe, anyway?” He says that the sermons “will be an intro to Unitarian Universalism for newcomers, a refresher for the experienced, and maybe a challenge for those who think they know it all!”

It’s also A Soup Sunday/Potluck, and it would be really helpful if you would bring a little extra for guests. Please let Evie Sustman know what you are bringing at evie@sustman.com. That way she’ll have some sense of our “offerings.” If you haven’t seen our new kitchen yet, here is your opportunity!

And speaking of offerings: Arthur has requested that we have an offering for local agencies that we support, so we will divide our proceeds between Two Rivers Ecumenical Pantry and Lakeshore Interfaith Hospitality Network. Please also bring food for TREP. There is a TREP box in the coatroom where you can leave your contributions.

Bob Kaeiser will speak on “Becoming a Quaker.” Many of you may know Bob. He’s been a peace activist for many years and a founding member of Lakeshore Peacemakers. He’s also been a minister and a social worker. He’ll tell about his personal faith journey at our 10:00 a.m. service on Sunday.

Sixth Principle: Water Ceremony

Many Unitarian Universalist (UU) congregations have an annual tradition of celebrating a Water Ceremony/Communion early in September as a ritual of welcoming members of their congregation to a new church year.

Though these services vary greatly from congregation to congregation, they are generally an excellent opportunity for UU congregations to express their commitment to our Sixth Principle: We Covenant to Affirm and Promote the Goal of World Community with Peace, Liberty and Justice for All.

Please join us at the Lakeshore Unitarian Universalist Fellowship for our Water Ceremony as we begin a new year of services.

The ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. at our new location at 620 Park Street.

Cathy & George Edwards - Chickens for Sale

Dear LUUF Friends,

As he has for several years, George raised a flock of broiler/roaster chickens this summer. They are corn and grain fed, no hormones or antibiotics. They are remarkably delicious and flavorful. The chickens will be processed commercially this Tuesday, and immediately available for purchase next week. They can be picked up at our house (near Whitelaw on Rte 10) or George may be able to deliver them.

If anyone is interested in puchasing 1, 2, or more, please email us (edwards9@hughes.net) or call George (920-860-6345). He's again asking $2.25/lb. The chickens are about 6-7 lbs, so $13.50 - $15.75 each. Makes a delicious family meal !

We've got reservations for about half the flock, but still have at least 20 chickens left (and not that much freezer room!). Let us know ASAP.

First UU Service at 620 Park Street

Hi LUUF’ers,

Thanks to all who have helped to clean, paint, move from our old building, and organize everything in their new spaces (and the painting currently being done by professional painters), the church is looking wonderful!! The painters have a few more days of work remaining so when you come to the service tomorrow, you will need to enter the building through the side door.

There are a few more items which still need attention – a second coat of paint on the basement floors, vacuuming and dusting the sanctuary and entry once the painters are finished, any additional preliminary decorating we would like to do, and whatever anyone wishes to bring up at the service tomorrow. Our goal will be to complete these items by the end of next week - before the city-wide church open house scheduled for 1-4pm next Sunday. Though we won’t have everything done, it seemed like a good idea to participate in the open house since there may be community members who are shopping for a new church home on that day.

We have volunteers signed up for lawn duty for September so we will see to it that we have a lawn mower available this week – after the painters are finished – to make the lawn and “landscaping” look as good as possible for the open house. If you want to help with the yard work before the open house, please give me a call. We will plan to have a short work day on Saturday beginning at 9am for those who would like to help get everything ready for the open house.
